We Made a Micro Game!!

You may or may not know this already, but here at Tesseract we’ve been developing our own wargame for a while now.

It’s currently held up a little in the concepting and sculpting stage, but rest assured when we reveal it fully, you’re gonna love it! It uses playing cards and unique abilities and is really focused on being super easy to pick up.

However, in the meantime… I couldn’t help myself and I went and designed a little microgame that whilst different, carries with it a lot of similar design philosophy, to our full game, Nexus.

You can download all the rules, totally free, right here but I wanted to also tell you a little about it today.

GridCrush is a 5 model per side game, that plays on a Chess board! That’s right, a Chess board! I designed this game to try to utilise things people have, so if you don’t want to use miniatures, you can just use chess pieces too. There’s no dice, but you will need a pack of playing cards. Other than that you’ll want a coin and maybe a handful of tokens if your memory isn’t great (like mine!).

The game plays like a very detailed form of chess, where rather than having the constants of its inspiration, the abilities and movement patterns of your pieces can change during the game. This makes it a little more reactive and fast feeling, rather than being about predicting the long game. You’ll of course still want to have a plan, but the cards in your hand will mean that plan has to be willing to change!

The whole ruleset fits on 3 sides of A4, and there’s a supplementary chart which each player will want a copy of.

Being a micro game, it’s super easy to make tweaks to the rules, so I’d love for you to give it a quick go (it shouldn’t take too long once you know the rules) and feed back to us what you think of the game.

Ultimately my hope here is just to give people another fun thing to do with their miniatures, but I also think this could be a great way to introduce non-wargaming types to playing with minis.

Drop us an email at hello@tesseractministudios.com if you have any thoughts after playing the game and please enjoy!
